DURHAM, NC — December 13, 2022 – “Once Upon a Wasteland,” an independent post-apocalyptic sci-fi audio drama podcast, announced today that it has been nominated for Best Writing (Show) in the Inaugural Signal Awards.

Now in its second season, “Once Upon a Wasteland” is an independent sci-fi audio drama originally launched in October, 2021.

“I’m floored by this nomination,” said creator Brad Williams. “To be nominated alongside giants like this is incredibly humbling, and shows that the most important thing in this space is telling a good story. It doesn’t matter whether that story comes from a big studio or from an independent production like us. One of the great things about podcasting is its accessibility for creators, and this nomination demonstrates how accessible it is. And none of this would be possible without an incredible community supporting us.”

Signal Award Finalists were selected by the Signal Academy which included Founding Jurors Jody Avirgan (Host, This Day in Esoteric Behavior); Ray Chao (GM of Audio, Vox Media); Rachael King (CEO and Co-Founder, Pod People ; Maya Watson (Head of Global Marketing, Clubhouse); Michael Gluckstadt (Director of Podcasts, HBO & HBO MAX); Anna Hossnieh (Executive Producer, iHeartRadio Comedy); Jenny Kaplan (Co-Founder and CEO, Wonder Media Network); Deray McKesson (Host, Pod Save the People / Co-founder & Executive Chair, Campaign Zero); and Nikki Silva (Co-Host, The Kitchen Sisters Present from PRX).

Podcast submissions far exceeded organizers expectations with domestic entries coming in from twenty-five states and global entries from four different continents. With nearly 1700 entries received in its first year, Signal Awards is already one of the largest honors for Podcasts in the world. Organizers also noted the diversity of companies creating and entering great Podcasts, including global media heavyweights like Apple, HBO Max, National GeographicNetflix and Paramount to pioneering companies Pineapple Street, Vox Media Podcast Network, Tenderfoot TV, Lemonada, Crooked Media, WaitWhat and Cadence 13.

“We created Signal Awards to celebrate and discover great works being done in the podcast space and the overwhelming response so far has affirmed our decision,” said managing director Deondric Royster. “Our show’s commitment to all things podcasting will ensure the best programming and content is celebrated and rightfully rewarded.”

As a nominee, “Once Upon a Wasteland” is also eligible to win a Signal Listener’s Choice Award, which is voted online by fans across the globe. From now until December 22nd, “Once Upon a Wasteland” fans can cast their votes at http://vote.signalaward.com/.
